Imbolg is a significant date in the Celtic calendar and is also Brigid’s day. It is the beginning of Spring & the half way point between the winter solstice & spring equinox. “Muire na nGael – Mary of the Irish” is how Brigid is known as Gaeilge (In Irish). Also known as St. Brigid, she is believed to have been born in Co. Louth and is celebrated for her role in converting Native Irish tribes to Christianity. She established what is believed to be the oldest Irish monastery in Co. Kildare.

St. Brigid has long been a favourite saint of this isle, recognised in Irish customs and traditions. She comes second only to St. Patrick in terms of the numbers of customs that asked for her blessing and guidance. She is famous for the Brigid’s cross, which is made from reeds & across the island of Ireland, crosses are made annually & placed above the front door, in kitchens, on rafters or above the hearth of the fire/ on the fireplace to protect homes from fires and evil.

Even today a Brigid’s Cross can be found in many Irish homes, especially in rural areas. In Christian mythology, St. Brigid and her cross are linked together by a story about her weaving a cross from the reeds on the floor at the death bed of her father, a pagan chieftain who upon hearing what the cross meant, asked to be baptised.
